It's frustrating when you turn the key in the ignition and your car doesn't start. Don't worry; jump-starting your car is an easy task that requires a set of jumper cables and a working vehicle with a good battery. Your Chevy dealer offers the following five-step guide on how to jump-start your car and swiftly get you back on the road. Position their car next to your vehicle - either in front of it or beside it - without touching each other, so the cables can reach. Ensure both vehicles are in neutral or park and the ignitions are turned off. Finally, engage both parking brakes to ensure stability. Step 2: Connect the Positive Red Clamps To jump-start your car, attach the positive red clamp of the jumper cables to the metal post on the positive terminal of your car's dead battery. Ensure the clamp is securely connected to the metal and won't come off. Then, attach the other positive red clamp to the metal post on the positive battery terminal of the car with the good battery. Step 3: Connect the Negative Black Clamps Fasten the negative black clamp to the good battery's negative terminal to complete the connection. Then, attach the other negative black clamp to an unpainted metal surface of your vehicle. Avoid connecting it to your dead battery. Step 4: Start Your Car First, make sure all the clamps are connected tightly, then start the car with the good battery and let it run for a few minutes. Once the battery is charged, start your vehicle and let the engine run. If it doesn't start, wait a few minutes and try again. Once the engine starts, you can safely remove the clamps in reverse order, beginning with the negative black clamp on the unpainted metal surface of your vehicle. Once your car starts, avoid switching off the engine. Instead, drive your vehicle for at least 15 minutes to recharge the battery. Step 5: What To Do if Your Car Doesn't Start Inspect the jumper cables if you experience difficulty starting your car. Ensure that the clips are correctly attached and firmly connected. Allow the functioning vehicle to run for approximately five minutes. Afterward, attempt to start your car again. If the battery is in good condition, your vehicle should start. If you still can't get the engine going, it may be necessary to replace your battery. When you need to jump-start your car, it is usually a sign that the battery is weak and needs to be replaced. If your tire goes flat while you're driving, carefully look around for a safe place to pull over. The choice is a flat area as far from other vehicles as possible. If you have to change your tire on the side of the road, make sure that your car is inside the breakdown lane. Warn Other Drivers When you pull to a stop, make sure you switch on your hazard lights. You can also lift your hood. These two signs will alert other drivers that you're stationary, and they will avoid you. It's also important to make sure you pull up the handbrake. Get Your Tools Changing a tire only requires a few items, and they are usually kept in your trunk. You'll need a lug wrench, a jack, and your spare. Loosen The Lug Nuts Use your lug wrench to loosen all the lug nuts until you can twist them by hand. Don't remove any of the nuts yet. Jack Your Car Using a jack is very easy, but it's important to position it correctly. The underside of your car has several sections that are reinforced and designed as lifting points for the jack. These sections are illustrated in your car manual. Position the jack under the closest section to the flat and lift your car high enough that the flat just touches the ground. Replace the Tire Remove all the lug nuts, then take the flat off the wheel hub and place it to the side. Lift the spare onto the wheel hub and rotate it until all the holes line up with the holes in the hub. Screw the lug nuts into the holes and tighten them by hand. Lower Your Car Lower your car and use the lug wrench to tighten each of the lug nuts securely. Put Everything Back Now your tire has been changed, it's time to put the flat, lug wrench, and jack back in your car. Once this is done, you're ready to drive away.
